DIY Throat Soothing Drops

I ran out of Thieves cough drops – these are a family favorite! Sadly they are also out of stock at the moment, but I needed a solution so I attempted to make my own cough drops. First they taste great, are made with wholesome ingredients, but not sure I will ever make these again. It’s just simpler to buy a few bags of Thieves cough drops to be honest.

What I love about making them? I had all the ingredients on hand, they are made with simple ingredients and carry the support of Peppermint, Lemon, and Thieves Young Living Vitality essential oils.

What I did not like about making these? They are super messy…I mean seriously I had to boil 2 pans of water to clean up everything, you definitely need a baster to make these look good and to have accurate sizing plus a silicone candy mold would have been super helpful to have for making these as well.

What you will need to make your own:

  • 1 teabag Oola Unwind tea or your favorite
  • 1 teabag other tea (I used Yogi Bedtime)
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ginger
  • ¾ cup boiling water
  • ¾ cup honey
  • Thieves vitality, Lemon vitality, and Peppermint Vitality (10 drops Each)
  1. In sauce pan steep teas, cinnamon, and ginger in boiling water for 10 minutes or more.
  2. Remove tea bags.
  3. Add honey.
  4. Heat over medium – high heat until mixture begins to boil.
  5. Clip candy thermometer to the side of your pan.
  6. Continue boiling until mixture reaches 300º.
  7. Watch carefully, it is really easy to burn when it gets this hot!
  8. Let mixture cool for 5 minutes, until it starts to get syrupy.
  9. At this point you can add essential oils.
  10. Fill rubber end of baster with mixture, gently push end of baster into rubber piece. Use baster to work quickly to make 1 inch drops on parchment paper.
  11. Dust with potato starch or tapioca starch to absorb condensation and prevent them from sticking together in storage.
  12. Store in an airtight container.

Use as needed to soothe throats.

I love Thieves laundry soap but I wanted to create a DIY option because I want everyone to have the option to switch and although Thieves Laundry soap is affordable when we are living on a budget and trying to make better choices for our health some would rather allocate less money to laundry soap and more money to supplements, personal care, and so forth. With that said I wanted to create one that didn’t have toxins in the ingredients but would be very budget friendly.

I found a few recipes (you can see on my previous post DIY Natural Laundry ) but wondered if I could come up with something a little better for those wanting something simple and yet packed a cleaning punch….I’m just so excited I have made a laundry soap that’s non toxic, smells great, cleans everything from sweaty clothes to dog beds, and get this… it cost just $3.29 for 100 loads of laundry 🤩

My Natural DIY Laundry Soap Recipe

I use one tbsp measuring spoon and scoop 1 heaping tbsp into washer on top of laundry. I have an HE washer. 😉

Not sure what Thieves household cleaner is??  Check out my post on thieves household cleaner

For the dryer I use wool dryer balls with 2 drops on each dryer ball (I use 6 balls). I have to reapply essential oil to dryer balls about every 5-6 loads.

*Shopping Saving tip Wal-Mart carries all three and you can order online!
Kirks Castile soap $3.28
Super Washing Soda $3.97
Baking Soda $7.57

Amazon is where I got my dryer balls and they have a variety of wool dryer balls but Wal-Mart carries them as well if you want a one stop online shopping experience.

DIY Household Wipes

Ditch your Clorox wipes for DIY Thieves Wipes!!
Did you know?? Original Clorox wipes contain
SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE (check it out) which has concern for cancer, asthma/respiratory, skin allergies, and developmental/reproductive toxicity.
The lemon and orange versions of these contain ingredients that are concern for Asthma and Respiratory as well. And Nope Lysol, Seventh Generation Disinfecting Wipes, Method All Purpose wipes, and Up & Up wipes all have the same concerns. 😫 Look up what’s in your wipes here: EWG search

Thieves Wipes DIY 2

1 – 1 1/2 caps of Thieves Household Cleaner
3 drops of Thieves Essential Oil
3 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil

After 20 – 25 minutes, the moisture should spread evenly through the paper towels. If not, you can add a little more water. Don’t add too much more – you want them to be moist, not sopping wet.
3. Use as desired to wipe everything super clean!
Not into DIY, no problem YL has Thieves wipes ready to go.
Thieves wipes are made with Alcohol, Water, Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, Rosemary, Sunflower lecithin, Quillaja saponaria extract.

Fabric Softener DIY’s:: I have a few options for you to choose from. 😉

I personally LOVE my Wool dryer balls with Essential Oils they speed up the dry time and leave our clothes static free and smelling fresh. For Essential Oils; I use really whatever essential oil I am drawn to at that moment LOL but my go to’s are Citrus Fresh, Purification, Lavender, and Geranium. But I also love to use a mix of Eucalyptus and Lavender. Use what you love! (I have a soft water system in my house, so I skip the water softening addons)

2 c. White vinegar
2 c. Water
1/8 c. Vegetable glycerin
10-20 drops Essential oil
cotton cloth (for dryer sheets)

1. Combine white vinegar, water and glycerin in a glass jar. (To make liquid fabric softener mix together in a vinegar jug, it’s easy to pour into the machine.)

2. Add essential oils, if desired, and stir or shake to combine.

To use this mix as Dryer Sheets

Add 100% cotton cloths to the fabric softener container. (you can simply rip up strips of flannel or cotton jersey or an old 100% cotton t-shirt can be cut up and made into dryer sheets. Make sure it’s 100% cotton.)

How to USE:

Liquid Fabric Softener – Add ½ cup to the final rinse cycle. Use fabric softener dispenser or a dispenser ball.

The Safer more Affordable option to Cleaning!

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love a good deal! I am very frugal with our money…. this is why when I first found Thieves household cleaner I was a little set back by the price…but then I did the math. Young Living’s Thieves household cleaner comes in two sizes: a 14.4 ounce bottle or a 64 ounce bottle. The 14.4 ounce bottle costs $22.50 (wholesale price). The 14.4 ounce bottle actually makes 432-720 ounces of ready to use cleaner (depending on the strength you want to make it) and costs only $0.03-$0.05 per ounce!  YEP! that’s affordable!

BUT….Let’s compare the prices of 7 other common household cleaners:
How will Thieves cleaner stack up to the price of some popular store-bought household cleaners:

– Fabuloso Passion of Fruits all-purpose cleaner: $0.05 per ounce
– Lysol Lemon Breeze all-purpose cleaner: $0.06 per ounce
– 409 Lemon all-purpose cleaner: $0.09 per ounce
– Mr. Clean Febreze and Citrus multi-surface cleaner: $0.11 per ounce
– Green Works all-purpose cleaner: $0.11 per ounce
– Myers Multi-Surface Everyday Cleaner: $0.25 per ounce
– Honest Company Multi-Surface Cleaner: $0.15 per ounce

💜MOST AFFORDABLE —> Thieves household cleaner (diluted appropriately and ready to use in a spray bottle – I reuse an empty spray bottle): $0.03-$0.05 per ounce. It’s even less when it is part of my Essential Rewards order…because you get points back to redeem later.

Now that we gone over affordability let’s chat Safety! Because that is also very important to me, when I began purging my home and began living a healthier lifestyle knowing what is in the products I am using and bringing into my home is crucial.

I looked up each of the above household cleaners on the Environmental Working Group’s website. EWG gives an A to F health rating for cleaning products:

A = Few/no known or suspected hazards to health or the environment; good ingredient disclosure.
B = Low concern; limited potential for hazards to health or the environment; at least some ingredient disclosure.
C = Moderate concern; some potential for hazards to health or the environment; at least some ingredient disclosure.
D = High concern; llikely hazards to health or the environment; may also have poor ingredient disclosure.
F= Potentially significant hazards to health or the environment; or poor ingredient disclosure.
Here’s how the cleaners rank:

– Fabuloso Passion of Fruits all-purpose cleaner: F rating
– Lysol Lemon Breeze all-purpose cleaner: C rating
– 409 Lemon all-purpose cleaner: F rating
– Mr. Clean Febreze and Citrus multi surface cleaner: D rating
– Green Works all-purpose cleaner: F rating
– Myers Multi-Surface Everyday Cleaner: C rating
– Honest Company Multi-Surface Cleaner: C rating

💜 SAFEST CLEANER —> Thieves household cleaner is not ranked by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). However, I did look up each of the ingredients on their website.
– Alkyl Polyglucoside has a B rating.
– Sodium Methyl 2-Sulfolaurate (or Lauric Acid) has an A rating.
– Disodium 2-Sulffolaurate (listed in their cosmetic database) has a rating of 1 (low hazard).
– Pure, therapeutic grade essential oils (Thieves cleaner contains Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, and Rosemary essential oil) are generally agreed upon to be a safe alternatives to harsh cleaning chemicals. Thieves household cleaner seems to be the safest choice!

We use Thieves cleaner all the time, for everything from animal habitats, bathrooms, laundry, floors, windows, and even our carpet . It is very affordable, safe, and works extremely well. Plus, it smells awesome and is biodegradable.

Essential Oils 101

I am so glad you stopped in today! I am an independent distributors for Young Living Essential Oils who is incredibly passionate about essential oils and the jaw-dropping things they can do. I’m a normal, everyday person who has found something powerful (and natural!) to get my family through our days with optimal health. This has resulted in cutting down on all the toxic products we used to put in and on our bodies every day. It is my hope that every single person I know will jump in with both feet because I’m confident about how much it will help everyone enhance and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Essential Oils 101

First things first, let’s talk about what essential oils even are, since apparently “they’re magic bottles of goodness” doesn’t really count. 😉

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. The way they are extracted is by resin tapping directly from a tree, cold pressing citrus rinds, and one of the most common ways they can be extracted is through the careful process of steam distillation of a plant’s root, stem, leaves, or flower petals. Because of how they’re extracted, the benefits found in essential oils are much more powerful and targeted than the plants they come from. Not only do they have unique scents, but they also help support the systems of the body, and as part of a daily regimen can help you achieve your goal of whole body health. We’ll get into more specifics about which oils do what in a minute, but let’s take a look at the basics of essential oils.

Since essential oils are highly concentrated and very strong, using them safely is important. The general rule of thumb is “low and slow,” which means to start out using a small amount until you know how you and your body respond to each oil. Each bottle of essential oil will be labeled according to how it should be used: Topical, Aromatic, or Dietary (for internal use). Based on those labels, here’s how you would use them.

Topical: apply the essential oils directly to your skin or with a carrier oil, depending on the oil and what the label recommends. Good carrier oils to use with essential oils are Coconut oil, Jojoba oil, Argan oil, Avocado oil, and others like them, whichever you prefer.

Aromatic: these oils can be diffused using an ultrasonic diffuser or inhaled directly from the bottle. Diffusing is the most popular method for this as it breaks down the oils and disperses them into the air for all to breathe in and enjoy their benefits.

Dietary: these oils can be ingested and used as a dietary supplement, allowing the oils to be dispersed through your body in a different way. You can put these oils in a vegetable capsule and fill the rest with carrier oil, or place a drop directly in your mouth, or add them to food or drinks in order to easily digest them and get the benefits that they provide. Young Living’s line of dietary oils is called Vitality oils, and that lets you know that the oils in those bottles are safe to ingest when used properly.

NOTEnot all oils are safe to be used topically or internally. In fact, some essential oils aren’t really good for you at all because of the fillers and synthetics used in them. That’s why I only use and recommend Young Living. We’ll talk a little bit about that soon. 🙂

essential oils 101

Safety is important when it comes to using essential oils. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all of the information available, but using common sense and starting gradually will help ease any sort of intimidation you might feel as you begin using essential oils in your everyday life.

1.When storing essential oils (EOs), it’s important to keep them in a cool, dark place with lids tightly closed (and always out of reach of children). You’ll also want to keep carrier oils (like coconut, olive, vitamin e, sweet almond oil, etc.) on hand for dilution. Always use and store EOs in glass containers, especially when drinking them in water, since most plastic products contain chemicals that can be broken down by the oil.

2. Most EOs are generally safe for use during pregnancy, but need to be used with common sense. As with any health program, you may want to consult with a health care professional beforehand. A great resource is the book “Gentle Babies” by Debra Rayburn.

3. Citrus oils are photosensitive and when applied to skin, they may cause a rash or dark pigmentation on skin exposed to UV rays or direct sunlight within 1-2 days after application of citrus oils.

4. Keep EOs away from eyes and never put them directly into the ears. Should irritation or accidental contact with eyes occur, never use water to clear the EO (they are not water-soluble). Instead use a carrier oil such as coconut oil or sweet almond oil to cleanse the area and reduce discomfort.

5. Epileptics and people with high blood pressure should use extra caution when using EOs with high ketones like basil, rosemary, sage, or tansy.

6. For people with allergies or sensitive skin, it’s best to test a small area (like the inside of the upper arm) then wait 30 minutes before applying to other areas. In general, the bottoms of the feet are safe for topical application.

7. Direct inhalation (not the same as diffusing) can be a deep and intensive application method, particularly for respiratory congestion and illness. This method should not be used more than 10-15 times throughout the day without first consulting a health care professional.

8. When adding EOs to bath water, start with 1-3 drops first mixed with Epsom salt to help disperse the oil. Never use more than 10 drops in one bath. If a dispersing agent is not used, serious discomfort can be caused because the oil tends to float undiluted on top of the water.

9. Young Living states right on the bottles if an oil is able to be consumed as a food additive. Also, they now have a “Vitality Line” that provides oils made for consumption. Please do not use any Essential Oil internally until you check to make sure it is an oil that can be ingested.

Essential Oils 101

Young Living has been the leader in essential oils for over 20 years, and they are constantly ahead of the pack in innovation and ensuring that their members get the absolute best in essential oils. I researched quite a bit before deciding to put my trust in Young Living and gave their oils a chance, and I’m so glad I did. The thing that eventually convinced me is their Seed to Seal guarantee. They take a lot of care to make sure that their members get the absolute best essential oils. They own their own farms and only partner with farms that meet their strict Seed to Seal guidelines. They plant their own seeds. They cultivate their own crops, and they guarantee no pesticides or chemicals or anything toxic is ever being used on them. In fact, YL treats their essential oil crops with their own essential oils! They oversee everything from planting to harvesting to distilling, then bottling and sending it to your door. They know what is in those precious little bottles – 100% pure essential oil. Not just 100% pure oil, which could mean as little as 11% essential oil mixed in with a carrier oil or other unknown substance.

Here’s a basic breakdown of what Young Living’s Seed to Seal guarantee is.

Seed: expert seed evaluation and selection.

Cultivate: sustainable growing and harvesting methods that meet the most rigorous standards.

Distill: an innovative combination of ancient and modern techniques to ensure the purest product and result.

Test: internal and third party testing to make sure the essential oils meet the most stringent specifications.Seal: a dedicated facility to provide careful sealing and inspection before shipping to your home.

As if the quality guarantee wasn’t enough to ease your mind, you can also rest assured that with Young Living, you’ll have the most vast choice of singles and blends. They offer over 167 essential oils, plant based cleaning products, natural mineral makeup, beauty line, baby line, supplements, an animal line, a line of products just for kiddos, a line of products for a healthy and fit lifestyle, and more!! Young Living has the biggest selection of essential oils and even allows us access to certain EO’s that no other company offers – due to their extensive farm ownership in several continents. You are not just getting oils… you’re getting the BEST essential oils which are grown in their land of origin.

Another thing I love about Young Living is that they start you with a variety of oils to help with all kinds of everyday issue that we all face. In fact, the premium starter kit comes with 11 oils, a diffuser, and other goodies. Let’s talk about the oils that come with it and how they can change your life. I know they did mine.

Essential oils 101

The Young Living Premium starter kit comes with 11 oils, a diffuser, samples, and information to help you get started. Let’s talk about these oils and their uses for a moment.

Lavender: Soothing and refreshing aroma. Use for winding down and relaxing before bedtime. Diffuse to create a calming and comforting atmosphere. Add to your favorite hair, body and beauty products. Diffuse to eliminate odors. Contains many constituents that contribute to a vast range of uses.

Supports healthy respiratory function. Flavors water. Perfect replacement for lemon juice or seasoning to flavor seafood, vegetables, beverages or desserts. Contains the powerful constituent limonene. Use to remove sticky residue from stickers, or to remove crayon/pen marks.

Peppermint Vitality: Supports gastrointestinal system comfort. Promotes healthy bowel function. Supports proper digestive function. Natural breath freshener. Helps promote focus and clarity by supporting a healthy nervous system. Helps with occasional constipation. Helps with occasional gas. Helps relieve minor aches and pains associated with daily life when taken internally. Helps alleviate nausea. Encourages proper respiratory function. Supports proper joint and cartilage function. Frankincense: Supports healthy skin when applied topically. Promotes feelings of calmness and balance. Increases spiritual awareness. May help smooth the appearance of healthy-looking, aging skin. Rub on bottom of feet to alleviate nervous energy. Add to your daily skin care regime as an excellent moisturizer.

Citrus Fresh: is a blend that may help to enhance the feeling of well-being in children. It is relaxing and calming and it smells SO good. Think citrus with a hint of mint. This blend is made up of six single oils. Orange brings peace and happiness to the mind and body. Tangerine is calming to the nervous system. Mandarin promotes happiness. It is also refreshing, uplifting, and revitalizing. Grapefruit is balancing and uplifting to the mind. Lemon promotes health and physical energy. Spearmint is uplifting to one’s spirit. Application: May be applied on the ears, heart, and wrists or worn as a perfume or cologne. Diluted with carrier oil for a full-body massage. It may also be added to water for a relaxing bath. It is excellent for children, though dilution with carrier oil is highly recommended. I love to use wool dryer balls and a few drops of Citrus Fresh for a fresh scent. Dry your clothes with the wool balls. When clothes are dry, add a few drops of oil to the wool balls and tumble dry for five minutes to scent clothes. You don’t need to spend money on fabric softener or dryer sheets and you eliminate a TON of harmful chemicals. LIFE HACK: You can also use a Young Living baby wipe as a dryer sheet. If you don’t have a baby, these wipes are also great to remove your makeup! So many great uses for the baby wipes. Safety Data: Avoid exposure to direct sunlight for up to 12 hours after use.

Great for energy. Peppermint is soothing and cooling. Eucalyptus radiata gives you a spa like experience when used or diffused. Application: Dilute one to two drops and apply to reflex points of the body. Apply topically to lungs and throat. Diffuse or put on pillow at night. Companion Oils: Melrose, RC, Thieves.

Key component for the entire Thieves line of products by Young Living. Helps freshen stale air when diffused. Use a drop or two in a spray bottle with water for cleaning. essential oils 101

I would absolutely love for you to join my team and I on this “Oily Adventure!” When you purchase the premium starter kit, you automatically become a Young Living member & will then receive their 24% off wholesale discount on future orders. I’m here to help and won’t let you go on this journey alone!

You do not have to renew your membership… the kit is a one-time purchase and you will remain a member as long as you spend $50 in a year. Your kit covers your whole first year & you will never be charged a renewal fee. If for some reason you choose not to make any further purchases, your membership just goes inactive after 12 months.

In addition you will receive continued support from me personally, a little welcome gift from me and if you are on facebook I have an amazing oils education group with tons of resources and added support.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me, I am here to help and love what I do!!

  4. Choose your Premium Starter Kit. There is 4 different diffuser options to choose from. (all 4 include the oils we went over, the only difference is the diffuser)

This is a monthly box shipped directly to your door, you choose what products you would like each month (never has to be the same), you earn points each month for your order that works like store credit; months 1-3 you earn 10% back, months 4-24 you will receive 20% back, and months 25+ you will receive 25% back. You can change your ship date, can cancel anytime (just be sure to use your points first), receive reduced shipping on your order, qualify for free bonus oils each month with monthly promos when you spend 100, 190, 250, or 300. There is a monthly minimum of 50. (don’t worry if your not sure what you would like to add for your first order can skip this part if you would like for now and join Essential Rewards anytime)
