Switching to All Natural Deodorant..you may need to detox!

Making the Switch doesn’t have to be a smelly one! I have been making my own deodorant for 2 years now. But when I made the switch I didn’t know there may be a detox period so I thought the deodorant wasn’t working, but it wasn’t the deoderant it was my body getting rid of all the chemicals I had been putting on it!! 😲

So let me me share with you what I have learned. When you are going from store bought deodorant to all natural there is sometimes a detox period that we must go though. So when you have been using deodorant that contains chemicals and begin using an all natural one here are some tips to help the transition! After doing a armpit detox I have noticed that I just don’t smell, in fact many days I don’t even need deodorant although when I am going to be out in the summer heat, out of the house for the day or when I go running I do apply because no one wants to stink like BO!

Detox your pits! through trial and error and lots of research I found a great way to do this from Wellness Mama. (I just love her)

You’ll just need bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar and water.

I use braggs apple cider vinegar

Ingredients
1 tablespoon bentonite clay
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1-2 teaspoons of water (to get right consistency)

Instructions
1. Mix all of the ingredients in a glass bowl (do not use metal!) with a wooden or non-metal spoon until about the consistency of sour cream.

2. Spread in an even layer over the armpits and allow to sit for 5-20 minutes. I suggest starting slowly and working up to a longer period of time once you see how your body adjust. If it hurts at all, remove immediately.
(This may cause some redness as it will increase blood-flow to the area, but it will go away quickly.)

3. Wash off in the shower or with a warm, wet washcloth.

4. Repeat daily or as needed until under-arm odor goes away and natural deodorant is non-irritating.

Also, make sure to drink a lot of water any time you stimulate lymph flow (dry brushing, massage, detox, etc) to help flush the body and avoid getting dehydrated.

The deodorant I use:
1 tbs baking soda
2 tbs kaolin clay
3 tbs coconut oil
2 tbs shea butter
1 tbs arrowroot
1 tbs beeswax
1 tbs rosehip (can use sweet almond or grapeseed)
20 drops Purification, 10 drops Lavender & Cypress (or you can use 20 drops purification and 10 lavender)

Directions:
1. combine shea butter, beeswax and coconut oil in double broiler (or use a large glass measuring cup in pan of boiling water)

2. Remove from heat when all is melted.

3. combine baking soda, kaolin clay, and arrowroot to melted shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax. Mix well.

4. in a separate bowl mix rosehip and essential oils.

5. combine rosehip/essential oil mix to deoderant base mix. Stir well.

6. pour into containers and allow to cool completely before use.

**If you need additional support while detoxing use one drop of purification to each armpit before applying this deodorant or other natural deodorants.

The deodorant my son likes and is a SUPER easy option for natural deodorant: make a 5ml roller bottle with jojoba or grapeseed oil + 20 drops of Purification

Not into DIY no problem!! Young Living has deodorant as well!!

Pink Himalayan Salt DIY’s

I Love Pink Himalayan salt for multiple reasons, but some of my favorite ways to incorporate it into my life is with simple DIY projects to replace a few of our body care products. I wanted to share with you three of my favorite recipes. Bath soak, scrub, and soap but first let’s talk about why I love himalayan salt!

Why Pink Himalayan Salt?

Pink Himalayan Bath Soak

1 cup Epsom Salt
1 cup pink Himalayan salt (this is the one I use Fine Pink Himalayan Salt)
1 tsp organic unrefined coconut oil
essential oils of choice (optional) 10-12 drops

  1. place himalayan salt in food processor or bullet and grind until powder
  2. add epsom salt and himalayan salt into a bowl and mix well
  3. add coconut oil and essential oils, mix well
  4. store in airtight container

add 1/4 to 1/2 cup to warm bath

Some Suggested Essential oils

Eucalyptus and Peppermint = sinus clearing

Lavender and Bergamot = Relaxation

Lemon and Rosemary = restful mind

Panaway and Lavender = relaxed muscles

Black Pepper, Marjoram, and Rosemary = sore muscle relief

Lavender and Eucalyptus = unwind

 

Pink Himalayan Scrub 

This one I use as a face scrub twice a week, it is also great as a body scrub. I mix mine in a 4 oz mason jar. You will need:
Pink Himalayan Salt
Organic Unrefined Coconut oil
Essential oils of choice (I use Young Living tea tree and Lavender)

  1. place himalayan salt in food processor or bullet and grind until powder
  2. add coconut oil until you’ve reached a creamy consistency, mix well
  3. add essential oils of choice and mix well.

Pink Himalayan Soap

(this will make 4lbs of soap)
22 oz organic unrefined Coconut oil
6 oz Olive oil
2 oz Apricot oil
2 oz Mango Butter (I get mine here Mango Butter)
4-6 oz Pink Himalayan Salt
12 oz Water
4.6 oz lye (I get mine here Lye)
Essential Oils of Choice
mica (I get mine here nurture soap)

I make this as a Hot Process Soap but you can use this for cold process also. I have added mica to give it a pink color, you can add your favorite color choice. Here is two examples of how I have done it in the past. One I added glitter to the top. (always use skin safe glitter)

*when making soap make sure that the supplies you are using are only used for soap making* You will need a designated crockpot, mixing bowls, stick blender, spatula, kitchen scale, and molds. **If you have never made Hot or Cold Process soap I highly recommend Youtube, there is a ton of videos available to show you the process, also Soap Queen has some great tutorials as well.

  1. measure your coconut oil, olive oil, apricot oil, and mango butter separately and place them in the crockpot. Turn your crock pot on High and allow them to melt. (I usually measure one at a time using the same bowl and just adding to crock pot after each one is measured)
  2. Measure out your water and lye SEPARATELY (I use a disposable red solo cup for my lye, using a new one each time, I throw away after each use. for water I use a glass bowl that is designated for mixing lye)
  3. While oils and butter is melting I mix my water and lye. This is critical NEVER mix water to Lye ALWAYS mix lye to water. slowly mix in a little of the lye at a time I use my spatula, stirring well but slowly. Your water bowl will become hot. Once mixed allow lye water to sit for 5 – 10 min
    *Safety: wear long sleeves, use gloves, and wear a mask when mixing. The fumes that come from the lye will stop within a minute or so. I use the fan from my overhead microwave above stovetop to aid in pulling the fumes out of the house.
  4. Turn your crockpot to low and slowly add in lye water while mixing with stick blender until a thick trace is achieved. *it will look like pudding*
  5. Put your lid on your crockpot and allow soap to cook for 15 min. After 15 min you will want to check your soap to see it’s progress. Your soap will grow in volume, if it starts to spill out of your crockpot stir like crazy to bring it down. It will start to fold in on itself, if you notice browning around the edges stir soap with your spatula so it will cook evenly. Continually check soap every 15 min to see progress. Once your soap looks like mash potatoes your ready for the next step.
    *To ensure that your soap is ready there is two ways to check it. You can use a pH strip to test the levels. It should be showing below a 10 or you can do a zap test, take a small dab of soap and allow it to cool slightly so you won’t burn your tongue. just dab the soap with your tongue if it zaps you it’s not ready and will need to cook a little longer, if you just taste soap it’s ready.
    NOTE: The amount of time that the soap takes in the Crockpot phase can depend on the size and shape of your Crock Pot. The flatter ones meant for roasts may go a bit quicker because the soap will be spread out thinner on the heated surface. For my standard sized Crockpot, 4lbs takes about 50 min to cook.
  6. Turn crockpot off and Add Himalayan salt and stir well to ensure that it’s fully incorporated into your soap. (you will want to work quickly as soap will start to harden)
  7. Add essential oils of choice (or fragrance) for essential oils depending on the essential oil you are using it may take a whole lot for your soap to retain the essential oils scent. To create a candy cane soap I used spearmint and peppermint, it took 30 drops peppermint and 20 drops spearmint. Be sure to stir in well.
  8. Now time to add mica. when using powder mica I use a shot glass add 1/4 full of olive oil and 1-2 scoops mica, mix well. If you want one solid colored soap you may need to add more. There are many ways to add color. One of the simplest ways is to make a small hole in your soap while it’s still in your crockpot and pour in color, then take your spatula a swirl the color making a fairly random pattern. but you have to work quickly.
  9. Using a large spoon or your spatula, transfer the soap into your mold, tapping the mold down on the counter in between each scoop, so you don’t have air pockets in your soap.
  10. Allow your soap to sit in mold for 24 hours.
  11. After 24 hours you may remove from mold and cut, although I find that in the winter even here in AZ you may need to let it sit for another 48 hours once demolded. to allow for it to completely set.
